Streatham Wells Reception Class Newsletter
April 2012
Hello and welcome back to all parents and carers. I hope you all had a lovely holiday and that the children enjoyed themselves. I will now tell you a little bit about what we will be doing in class over the next few weeks.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development:
We will continue to have a wide variety of interesting and challenging activities available for the children to take part in order to keep them excited and motivated at school. Soon we will be planting different vegetables and flowers under our ‘growing’ topic. We will be helping the children to work well as part of a group by playing games with them involving taking turns and sharing. We will also be helping the children to consider the consequences of their words and actions as well as encouraging them to think about other people’s feelings.
Communication, Language and Literacy:
To fit in with our growing topic the children will be looking at a variety of fiction and non fiction books, including stories such as ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The children will do some writing about the stories and also get the chance to retell and re-enact them.
I will soon be giving out some more ‘tricky words’ for the children to take and practise at home. Please remember to read the words that the children have already taken home together so that they do not forget them!
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy:
We will continue to promote an interest in numbers and counting by singing number songs with the children and providing a wide variety of number puzzles and activities for them to take part in. This term there will be lots of practical numeracy activities, such as counting beans, looking more at addition and subtraction as well as comparing the heights of different plants.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World:
During our ‘growing’ topic we will be planting seeds in both small pots for the children to take home and outside in our garden. The children will be recording the plants’ growth by taking photographs using the digital camera. They will care for the plants themselves and transfer them to bigger pots as they grow.
Physical Development: As ever, there will be lots of opportunities for the children to explore moving both inside and outside. We will continue with our music and movement sessions every week on a Tuesday. As the weather gets warmer we will spending more time outside and introducing the children to activities such as races, which are always popular.
Creative Development: The children will get the opportunity to get creative this term by trying out new techniques with different art materials such as tissue paper and powder paints. There will continue to be a range of junk modelling materials available for the children to use to make their own creations with. This is something that they really love doing. The week beginning Monday 21st May is our whole school ‘Arts Week’ where we will have lots of practical activities.
Some other reminders
Sun Lotion
Now that the weather should get warmer can I please ask you, especially those of you with children whose skin burns during sun exposure, to make sure that you put a high SPF lotion (minimum of SPF30 is best) on their skin before they come to school. The children spend part of the day outside so their skin needs to be protected. Sun hats and sunglasses are also important too so please bring these in if you have them. Hats should be clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Many thanks
