Year 2

YEAR 2 NEWSLETTER – SUMMER TERM

Dear Parents/Carers,

In the first half of the Summer term we will be working on new topics in Science, History and ICT as well as exciting Maths and Literacy! We also have visits and drama workshops planned and, of course, a whole week dedicated to the Arts!

Please continue to read with your child at home and help them to learn their weekly spellings. If the words your child brings home  appear quite simple, it is because these are words which are spelt incorrectly on a frequent basis by a large number of children.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child or what we are doing in class, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

Class Teacher – Year Two

Literacy

The children will be reading, writing and telling short stories. They will also be reading non-fiction texts relating to our current topics. Writing will focus mainly on various forms of information text but we will also work on how to structure stories and improve them through the use of description and connectives.

Numeracy

The children will be looking at number sequences and recognizing patterns and relationships between numbers. They will refine mental calculation strategies and practise applying their skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve a variety of one- and two-step problems. They will also be revising and refining their understanding of 2-D and 3-D shapes.

History

We will be learning about the life and times of Florence Nightingale and why she is still remembered today.

Science

Our topic is ‘Health and Growth.’ We will be learning about the importance of healthy eating and exercise and the safe use of medicines.

P.E

Indoor P.E will focus on dance.

In outdoor games lessons, the children will be taking part in athletics activities.

Music

Children will be learning a variety of new songs, composing their own music and learning how to notate it so that others can read and play their compositions.

ICT

Children will be learning how to program a floor turtle using simple command sequences.

DT

The children will be taking part in some food technology sessions linked to our Healthy Eating topic and designing and making textile products.
